Speeding Ticket

Cited for Speeding in Pennsylvania? Protect Your License and Your Record.

A speeding ticket might seem minor, but in Pennsylvania it can lead to points on your driving record, increased insurance rates, hefty fines, and even license suspension if you accumulate too many points. For commercial drivers, professionals, and students, the consequences can be especially damaging.

At Sheridan Lawyers, we represent drivers in Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties who have been cited for speeding and other traffic offenses. We know how PennDOT’s point system works and how to fight tickets to protect your license and your livelihood.

Speeding Laws in Pennsylvania

You can receive a speeding ticket for:

  • Driving faster than the posted speed limit

  • Driving faster than is “reasonable and prudent” for road conditions (even if below the limit)

  • Exceeding 55 mph by more than 6 mph on limited access highways

  • Exceeding work zone speed limits, which carry enhanced penalties

Police may use radar, pacing, speed-timing devices, or speed traps to issue citations—each of which can be challenged in court.

Penalties for Speeding in Pennsylvania

Consequences depend on how fast you were allegedly driving over the limit:

  • 6 to 10 mph over: 2 points

  • 11 to 15 mph over: 3 points (plus possible 15-day license suspension if in a work zone)

  • 16 to 25 mph over: 4 points and license suspension in work zones

  • 26 to 30 mph over: 5 points, possible license suspension, higher fines

  • 31+ mph over: 5 points plus mandatory license suspension and possible hearing

If you already have points on your record, even one ticket could trigger a license suspension and require PennDOT hearings.

Defense Strategies for Speeding Tickets

At Sheridan Lawyers, we know how to challenge speeding tickets. Defense strategies include:

  • Challenging the speed-measuring device: Was radar or pacing properly calibrated and used?

  • Cross-examining the officer’s testimony: Did the officer have a clear line of sight?

  • Work zone enforcement errors: Were signs posted correctly and visible?

  • Negotiating for reduced charges: In many cases, we can reduce points, fines, or keep the ticket off your record.

Our goal is to help you avoid points, protect your insurance rates, and preserve your license.
